Much like with the AKTs, here is a “fact” – this will happen to you, “guaranteed”.

So:

  • Don’t panic!
  • Expect it will happen at some point, no matter how well prepared you are
  • Then we can plan for it.

When (not if) this happens to you, your first job is to acknowledge and accept it, take a big breath in and not panic.

This is what to do:

  • Read the case.
  • Then read the actual question, and spot exactly what is being asked – as you now know, the addition of a single word can change the entire meaning of the question
  • Then, go back to your case, and spot the clues.
  • If it is an EMQ, look at your answers. Are any so obviously wrong that you can discount them from the outset?
  • Can you spot which guideline might be relevant?
  • Finally, can you link the clues to the best answer?

Unlike the AKT, with the KFP there are many ways to lose marks, so don’t forget the cardinal rules of the KFP:

  • Find the clues.
  • Make sure you understand the lead in question – a word changes everything.
  • Avoid overcoding – the arch nemesis of all that is good.
  • Be specific in your responses. A vague answer is as good as nothing.
  • Don’t be pinged by actions vs options, and pharmacological vs. non-pharmacological.
  • If you can, watch out for being capped - show off your breadth of knowledge.
  • Avoid killer marks – don’t write down something dangerous. If you aren’t sure if your answer is dangerous, err on the side of caution and avoid it.
