How might the KFP MSQ test professionalism?
Feb 18, 2025
Lots of people have been messaging direct about the KFP MSQ format and how it might look, and most crucially if it is any easier than the former KFP. Of course, none of us will ever know just yet, but given that I suspect lots of people are asking the same sorts of questions, I thought I would post a few of the more common questions.
Have a look at this made-up KFP MSQ question (written in my own personal capacity):
******************
Chantelle Gibson, aged 31 years, shares during her consultation that her former GP had a sexual affair with her sister. Her sister is also a patient of the same GP. She insists that this information be kept confidential and asks you not to disclose it.
Chantelle’s medical history includes major depression, which is managed with a psychologist. Her BMI is 42 kg/m², and her examination findings today are normal.
Question:
What management actions are appropriate in this situation? Select two (2) management actions.
Options:
- Inform Chantelle of your mandatory reporting obligations to AHPRA. (Score:1)
- Report the conduct of the GP to AHPRA. (Score:1)
- Contact your medical indemnity insurer for advice.
- Document the conversation in the medical record.
- Report the GP to the Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC) or state/territory equivalent.
- Advise Chantelle to report the GP to AHPRA herself.
- Maintain confidentiality and take no further action.
****************
The obvious questions here might be why is seeking MDO advice and/or documenting incorrect?
To answer this, have a look at the original made-up KFP on which this was baed upon:

Chantelle Gibson, aged 31 years, tells you that the GP she used to see had a sexual affair with her sister. She asks you not to tell anyone. Her sister is also a patient of the same GP.
What management actions are appropriate? Write two (2) management actions.

Maximum Score: 4
- Inform her of your mandatory duties to report to Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) (Score:2)
- Report conduct of GP to Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) (Score:2)
- Contact medical indemnity insurer for advice (Score:1)
- Report GP to Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC) (or State/Territory equivalent) (Score:1)
- Document conversation (Score:1)
- Advise her to report GP to Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) (Score:1)

The principles on which both questions are based on are relatively simple. The Medical Board of Australia makes it clear that mandatory reporting is a professional obligation, and mandatory reporting is defined in the law.
The threshold for reporting is met when there is a reasonable suspicion of:
-impairment
-intoxication while practising
-a significant departure from accepted professional standards
-sexual misconduct.
In this instance there is a reported allegation of sexual misconduct, which triggers the requirement to submit a mandatory notification. You may argue “but it is one word against another” – it is not our job to investigate it, rather it is our job to report the allegation to allow Ahpra to investigate.
However, this is where the new format gets interesting. On the one hand, it might be easier to not have to write out each of these options. However, on the other hand you are forced to be much more specific, if only two correct answers might score out of a long almost-correct-grid, and on the old format you would have scored 50% of the marks available had you gone for seeking advice from the MDO and/or documenting what had been disclosed.
