If you have done lesson (e) then you will fly through this section. If not, then go back and read lesson (e)!

This is how it might look:

What non-pharmacological management options are appropriate?

Non-pharmacological = NOT medications. If you write a medication answer, you don’t score. Even if it is correct.

Options and actions we have previously discussed, but for recap:

Options means just that – options. You might not do them all the same time – so it broadens you range of options available. Think of your answers as a menu – you won’t select all of them, but you might select a couple.

Actions means that your answers must be mutually compatible – i.e., they cannot interact, and that you might do all of them at the same time.

But what exactly is a non-pharmacological action?

Put simply it covers any action that is not a medication – ranging from referrals through to specific advice through to notifying public health. For the purposes of this question, vitamins and mineral supplements are pharmacological and should not be used here.

What about emollients? In the academic world there is great debate as to whether they are pharmacological or not.  In our many tens of years of experience we see emollients being treated as pharmacological – best avoid emollients as an answer for a non-pharmacological question unless you get desperate for an answer.

These questions are incredibly diverse and come in all shapes and sizes. We will step you through many tens of questions like these.  Do remember though that the answers here are all subject to specificity, capping, overcoding and killer answers so have a quick look at these before you embark.

If you ever make a referral - state who to, the reason for it and the urgency of it.

The PassGP Examiner Hints and Tips really come to life here, and we will show you how to avoid all of these pitfalls and many more. All whilst maintaining a smile.
